Reading his writing

The Creative Writing Program at Irmo International High School for the Arts offers students many opportunities to explore and produce imaginative writing in each of the four primary genres:  poetry, fiction, drama, and literary non-fiction.  Over the course of their studies, students learn the basics of the craft of creative writing; courses culminate in the submission of a portfolio of students’ best work.

Read-Alouds and performance of student work are frequent classroom events, where creative exploration and collaboration are emphasized.  Students are encouraged to share their writing through public performances of their work and through publication in the school’s award-winning literary magazine, Lagniappe.  Visits from professional writers provide students with insight into the business of writing creatively, and students are encouraged to submit their work to local and national writing contests.
