MISSON

The mission of the AFJROTC program is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.

GOALS

The goals of this program are to instill values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment in high school students.

OBJECTIVES

Our objectives are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship; promote community service; instill responsibility, strengthen character, and self- discipline; and provide instruction in air and space fundamentals.

Through these objectives, cadets will:

        Understand the need for national security, authority, and military in a democracy.

        Develop patriotism.

        Develop habits of order and discipline using military training.

        Develop strong morals, self-reliance, self-esteem, leadership, and communication skills.

        Be familiar with the aerospace age, doctrine, and career opportunities.

        Be familiar with military customs, courtesies, and traditions.

        Graduate high school and pursue higher education or vocational goals.

        Develop social skills and values and adhere to the Cadet Code of Conduct and Honor Code.

        Participate in community service activities.

        Follow the rules of parents, school administrators, teachers, and community officials.

Irmo high School Air Force Junior ROTC was established at Irmo High School in September 1972.  In its 49 year history, Unit SC-071 has earned numerous awards and recognitions.

Air Force Association Sword of Excellence Award four times as the top Air Force Junior ROTC unit in the State of South Carolina

SC-071 participates in many different events in the community:  Okra Strut Parade, Veterans Day Parade, Color Guards for different events in the community and Irmo High School sport and events.   They participate in Adopt-A-Highway four times a year with St Andrews Rotary Club.  Presents the colors at USC men’s home basketball games.   The unit has a competition drill team and drum and bagpipe corps.  We also do archery, marksmanship, academic team, Kitty Hawk Air Society, color guard team, saber team, aerospace team, awareness presentation team to mention some.
